The Southern Bent-wing Bat is an insectivorous, cave-dwelling microbat considered critically endangered, with its population having declined significantly in recent decades. The species is reliant on two main maternity caves for rearing and roosting and is highly susceptible to human disturbance, including light and noise, where valuable reserves of body fat are consumed when disturbed. How might we design a solution to save this species?

What A Batty Life! is a non-profit gamified rewards app where all revenue goes towards bat conservation. Through its top-down approach that incentivises “refusal”, it aims to motivate widespread change in human behaviour to be more bat-friendly and protect the Southern Bent-Wing Bats from further harmful human activity.
